The Pistol is your starting weapon. 20 damage with semi-auto fire is serviceable for the first few levels, but the Assault Rifle at Level 5 is a strict upgrade in almost every situation.
Early levels before you unlock anything better.
Stick with the Pistol until Level 5. It's not flashy, but it's reliable — focus on learning maps and movement instead of grinding for a new gun.
